I pressed the pen down on the paper, then quickly pulled away. I had made my decision I would not sign. I passed it to the person in front of me and attempted to return my attention to Ms. Strom. As Ms. Strom continued teaching, the rustling of the paper became a distraction. Soon she snatched the paper and slipped it into the pocket of her sweater. She reprimanded us and continued teaching. That simple piece of paper consumed my thoughts for the rest of class. After class, Ms. Strom dismissed us for our break. When we returned we took our seats quietly, waiting to see what would happen. Is she going to confront us about the paper? Are we all going to get in trouble? I wondered. To keep my hands from trembling I sat on them. Ms. Strom calmly walked to the front of the class, picked up a piece of chalk and began writing an assignment on the chalkboard. She then announced that this was an extra assignment due to the class rudeness in creating a disrespectful paper about her and passing it around class. After what seemed like an eternity, the day was over. I couldnt wait to get home. As I was leaving the classroom to catch my bus, Ms. Strom called my name. My heart started to race as I walked toward her. Yes, Ms. Strom? I asked as calmly as I could. She picked up an envelope from her desk, handed it to me and said Thank you. I stood there blankly as she turned to straighten up the classroom. Not knowing what to do, I left. As soon as I got home, I ran up to my room and opened the envelope. I took out the small piece of stationary and read: Dear Amy, I wanted to write and thank you for not signing the paper. It truly shows your character. It must have taken a lot of courage to choose not to sign it. It means a great a deal to me. Thank you, Ms. Strom I was shocked that Ms. Strom appreciated me not signing the paper enough to write a thank-you note. I was even more grateful now knowing how much it meant to her. I will never forget this because of the great impact it had on my life. I hope I will continue to make choices like this that build people up instead of tearing them down.

But tis a spirit A thing divine, for nothing natural I ever saw so noble. , this is not because Ferdinand is so incredibly handsome, but because he is the first man, bar her father than Miranda can ever remember seeing, which means that any other human is going to be beautiful to her. Similarly the implications of this entrapment on the island is visible in Prospero by his ever-growing sense of wanting power. Following his banishment from his Dukedom he is reluctant to let go of Miranda to another man an in turn uses Ferdinand as his slave, showing he is unwilling to have another human being on the island without them under his authority. Or this can be seen as the caring father scared for his confused teenage daughter to get hurt, as he probably well knows what it feels like to be betrayed or cheated by someone close to you, in Prosperos case, Antonio.

This theory is beneficial in understanding the society in both objective and subjective levels. It also aims at understanding the society norms and individual benefits from the society (Ritzer et al., 2003). It emphasizes that individuals can change cultural norms and society according to their behaviour. Behaviour of the individual doesnt essentially influence the society. However certain habits may create positive or negative effect on the society. When a individual tries and modifies their bodies away from the knowledge of the society, it makes no difference. However, when individual tries to modify the society by habits and behaviour, it creates a social impact. Body modification increased rapidly in the western countries over the years and slowly spreading to other countries as a trend of fashion. Some of the body modifications include tattooing, piercing, cutting, branding, inserting rings or studs to ears, navel, nose, eye brows (Featherstone, 1999). These modifications are gradually occurring and take a period of time to get noticeable (Featherstone, 1999). Use of technology in body modifications is another additional practice, and this includes wearing spectacles for clear vision, using hearing aids and various body implants at heart, kidney and skin surfaces. Use of these modifications is necessary in normal functioning of a body in absence of regular controlled physiological process. When the body tends to become weak or unable to resist changes, these technological devices and nano technological products are used within or over the body to improve health condition and reduce pain in human beings (Featherstone, 1999). Science and fiction influence body modification procedures indirectly by fascination and intention to follow or copy. Films are the major sources of science fiction and some of them include Robocop (Paul Verhoeven, 1987), Blade runner (Michael Deeley and Ridley Scott, 1982). Some of the films also emphasized on cyberspace and its influences which markedly improved fashion sense of human beings (William Gibson, 1986). Media and magazines are alternatively cheaper resources to human beings which influence fashion. These resources create a cultural impact on human beings to adapt very commonly to makeovers and changeovers. Cultural aspects of the society have been gradually changing through media (Featherstone, 1982, 1991). Society tends to copy the fashion culture and adapts to it rapidly. Clothing is one such example, which changed over the years from extensive heavy clothing to lighter loose clothing exposing the skin (Bourdieu, 1978; Featherstone, 1987). However, these changes could create a wrong social and cultural impact on the society when wrongly used and interpreted in certain circumstances (Lloyd, 1996). One of the major body modifications noticed almost everywhere is body building in men and dieting practices in women to change their body pattern to an entirely different look. According to Lee Monaghan, Males tend to in habitat the culture of musculature increasingly and depend on gym and training centres to shape out the body. They tend to adapt these changes to gain the attention of women and society. Females, on the other hand are in a trend of zero-size and slim versions and depend drastically on gym and dieting centres to shred the extra fat away (Featherstone, 1999). These attempts by the society although improves the heath and physique of an individual, it also brings some deleterious changes in the human body. Some of the changes include unimaginable body shapes after rigorous work outs and change in the feminine body structure in females. According to Roberta, not every body reacts in the similar manner to technology and exercise. Some bodies tend to improve and some tend t o become abnormal in look and sense. In certain women, changeovers and makeovers could lead to deleterious effects such as change in feminine features (Doug Aaoki, 1996). She describes the use of lipsticks and feminine aids to restore the lost feminity. Regardless of all these attempts, it appears as gender crossing dressing to the society (St Matin and Gavey, 1996). Many of the body modifications are irreversible and hence care should be taken in order to adapt to them. Many of the body modifications are based on changing culture and fashion. Improving with fashion is different from complete transformation. Many of the body modifications cannot be reversed and irreversible body modifications are a risk to try (Paul sweetman). Sweetman describes that fashion trends vary from person to person and permanence of fashion depends on the type of body modifications he is willing to adapt. According to Polhemus and Procter (1978), body modifications are anti-fashion trend followed in modern days and is a means of escapism to avoid the traditional attire. Giddens (1991) supports the context by description of body project whereby tradition is dissolved in modern times with relevant excuse of fashion trends. Positive influence of body modifications on the society: Body modifications are seen as positive phenomenon by various sociologists. Many of them describe it as growing modern with the changing world. Shildrick describes that society tends to change rapidly and body modification is an enhancement procedure to individualise and identify ones own self separately and uniquely. The positive aspect of modifying body according to the latest trends to inculcate modernity in the system is appreciated by many modern sociologists. In addition, Society has gained a lot from using certain body modifications to ease their lifestyle (Featherstone, 1999). Use of spectacles and hearing aids has improved style of living with betterment. Adventures in surgical and clinical field by body implants of heart, kidney and artificial limbs have created a milestone. Use of these clinical modifications reduced mortality rate and improved longetivity of life (Featherstone, 1999). Use of artificial limbs has paved an ease of lifestyle for the physically challenged people. This improved their lifestyle and increased chances of competition and survival in complex modern life. Religious Symbolism in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In his novel The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck portrays the movement of a family of migrant workers, the Joads, from Oklahoma to California during the Great Depression. Steinbeck's novel, though it is surprisingly lacking in surface-level symbolism, was "conceived [on] simultaneous levels of existence, ranging from socio-economic determinism to transcendent spirituality" (DeMott, xiii). One of the many levels on which this novel can be read is as a parallel to the stories of Christ and the Exodus (Louis Owens, John Steinbeck's Re-Vision of America, quoted in DeMott, xiii). Steinbeck intertwines allegories based on these two stories throughout his novel. Through these intertwined religious textures, and the destitution and depression that constitutes the greater part of the novel, Steinbeck conveys the message of the impending "death of religion" while at the same time establishing his novel as a sort of new gospel for the people. On the surface, one can read Steinbeck's novel in one of two ways: by reading the longer, even-numbered chapters, one gains a close understanding of the life of this particular family. But by reading the shorter, odd-numbered, "intercalary" chapters, which could almost constitute a short novel in and of themselves, one begins to comprehend the "epic sweep" of the exodus of multitudes of workers to California, the apparent promised land. Steinbeck intended to separate these two stories in the reader's mind, as we see in his journal kept while writing the book, published later as Working Days: I find that I am not very satisfied with the numbering of these chapters. It may be that they simply will be numbered with large nume... ...apes highlight the differences between the times in which the two stories were written, and the flaws of the culture in which Steinbeck wrote. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

C. S. Lewis once said, â€Å"no one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. † In Dylan Thomas’s villanelle, â€Å"Do not go gentle into that good night,† written within the Emerging Modernist Period, illustrates a man grieving his old and dying father to rage at death for people should look over their lives and have confidence of having accomplished the defining moments by taking risks and having no fear before death is upon them. Within the first tercet, a young man reacts to the closeness of death with a fighting approach as to rebuke the acceptance of the end.Throughout the poem, the repetition and rhyming of the last words helps to allow the reader to understand the making of a form of writing know as a villanelle. One of the two key phrases within this villanelle, â€Å"do not go gentle into that good night,†(1) occurs several times to emphasize the plea against death the speaker has toward men in old age and the personification â€Å"of Glouceste r’s son Edgar† (Cyr) from William Shakespeare’s play King Lear.The diction of â€Å"gentle†(1) is an adjective in place of an adverb making the â€Å"less grammatically correct†(Hochman) â€Å"gentle†(1) an epithet for his father and involving the relationship shared between the two men through their personal background. The second key phrase, â€Å"rage, rage against the dying of the light,†(3) gives insight towards Thomas’s following poem, the â€Å"Elegy,† when the detail of the relationship between a young man, Dylan Thomas, and his father.Furthermore, the metaphor of â€Å"the dying of the light†(3) conveys the history of one of Thomas’s favorite poets, W. B. Yeats and his military background within the phrase â€Å"†Black out†Ã¢â‚¬ (Cyr) helps to clarify that death draws near. Within these two lines, the author uses words such as â€Å"gentle† and â€Å"rage,† â€Å"dyingâ €  and â€Å"good,† and â€Å"night† and â€Å"light† as a contradictory term within the diction.Likewise, the alliteration and the consonance of the â€Å"g† in â€Å"go gentle†¦ good†(1) and â€Å"rage, rage against†(3) help to signify as the â€Å"chorus†(Overview: â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night†) within the remainder of the villanelle. Within the next four tercets, the achievements of four different kinds of men in old age neglected to lessen the gloom within their surroundings. â€Å"Wise,†(4) â€Å"good,†(7) â€Å"wild,†(10) and â€Å"grave men†(13) are metaphors for men who have â€Å"failed to enlighten the dark world in which they live. †(Hochman)Thomas uses the metaphors of â€Å"at their end,†(4) â€Å"last wave by,†(7) â€Å"too late,†(11) and â€Å"near death†(13) to stand as the appearance towards death. The imagery within the vill anelle, â€Å"words had forked no lightning,†(5) â€Å"danced in a green bay,†(8) and â€Å"caught and sang the sun in flight†¦ they grieved it on its way†(10-11) is that of dark descent towards a â€Å"more dangerous world†¦ of human wildness†(Hochman) which is followed by the diction of â€Å"be gay†(14) as a â€Å"state of lightness†(Hochman) to â€Å"contrast the light and dark imagery. (Overview: â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night†) Within line fourteen, the consonance of â€Å"bl† in â€Å"blind†¦ blaze,†(14) the alliteration of the â€Å"i† sound inside â€Å"blind eyes†¦ like,†(14) and the assonance of the â€Å"z† sound in â€Å"eyes†¦ blaze like meteors†(14) helps to explain the syntax of the tercet.In addition, Thomas’s purpose of â€Å"grave men,†(13) serious men, who can see but have no vision now understand the capability of posses sing a serious and happy life style functions as a paradox for the men â€Å"are blind†(Overview: â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night†) and cannot see yet have a better understanding than a man with sight and this comprehension of sudden enlightenment continues into the final lines of this intimate villanelle.The last quatrain contains a personal request to a young man’s father to show true emotions during the hardship before death comes within the night. Thomas begins the last stanza addressing the audience, his father, which reveals to the reader an â€Å"obliquely drawn persona†(Cyr) of the personal relationship between a sickly father and his caring son. Following, the author uses â€Å"on the sad height†(16) as a metaphor towards death as well as a paradox to enlighten the aspect of life achievements.Thomas’s use of the â€Å"religious overtones†(Welford) in â€Å"on the sad height, curse, bless†(16-17) relates to the imagery in the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible for a â€Å"sad height†(16) is â€Å"sad†(Westphal) sense Moses cannot enter the Promised Land he dies on the summit of Mount Nebo and Joshua, his â€Å"’son,’†(Westphal) grieves at the loss of a â€Å"solid rock in his life. †(Welford) The imagery, â€Å"curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears†(17) stands as a specific plea to the audience to give the speaker the blessing of fearful and uncontrollable tears that he had not done prior and to â€Å"curse†(17) those â€Å"who will be left behind. (Hochman) The devises of the â€Å"s† sound as assonance occurring on line 17, â€Å"curse, bless†¦ fierce tears† allows the rhythm of the poem to continue the elaborate patterns throughout the poem. The final quatrain portrays the theme of the villanelle that the grieving of man at the sight of his dying father allows the fear of loss or suffering to change any perceptions towards death.

2015 SAT Scores By State    Approximately 1.7 million students took the SAT in 2015 and the test scores varied greatly according to things like gender, ethnicity and even household income. (If you want to see that report, you can check it out here.) Its interesting, however, to see how students fared on the SAT according to their home state. The data below represents how students fared on the exam in  your  neck of the woods.   SAT Score Note Currently, the  Redesigned SAT uses a scale with a high of 1600. There are two chief areas that receive a score out of 800: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Those two scores are added to get the total.   Please keep in mind that the scores reported in 2015 (those below) are based on the former SAT scoring scale, which had an absolute maximum of 2400. The former test added the Writing, Mathematics and Critical Reading sections, which had maximum scores of 800, to achieve a total score out of 2400. The national average in 2015 was a 1497, so as you can see, many states outperformed the average by significant numbers. In order to understand the different causes and effects of psychology, you must first be able to know and understand the definition of it. Lahey defines psychology as the sciences of behavior and mental processes, and then he elaborates the meaning to make sure that we fully understand the definition of psychology. Unlike any other sciences, psychology is the only science where you use the mind to study the mind. I believe that the second most important point that Lahey presents in the introductory is the note on cognitive learning. Lahey understands that psychology is probably an unfamiliar subject to us, therefore, he gives us guidelines to help us better understand what we are reading. He states that we must apply what we already know with the information that we learn in the textbook. He also states that we must be able to apply, ask questions, and be able to clarify the new information that we read.
